Upcoming Event | August 2010

Join us this Saturday, August 28th for a tour out to picturesque Shelburne Falls, MA. We will depart the grange parking lot at 10:00 am and head westward along scenic back roads to our destination.

Our plan is to have lunch in Shelburne Falls where there are several lunch locations to choose from, then spend the day in their local shops and check out the attractions the town has to offer.

Plan on a full day, full tank of gas and pack a lunch if you wish to take in the views of the “bridge of flowers”. If you have any questions, call Sue and Wayne Champagne. The weather looks fantastic for this tour – hope to see you Saturday!

"Picnic On The Green"
Hope you were able to Join Us!

On Saturday, June 19 at 11:00am, a perfect sun filled day, Gene and Barb Tallone led 8 Model A’s as they toured through horse country on scenic roads to enjoy a picnic on the beautiful grounds of Tower Hill Botanical Gardens.

Our tour group consisted of the Champagne’s, Croci’s, DelMastro’s, Linden’s, O’Brien’s, Samuels, and Zappala’s. After arriving we were joined by Chuck O’Neal, who took time from work, and Jo Johnson & Jack Stokinger. In addition to the variety of gardens we were treated to a magnificent view of the mountains to the west and the Quabbin Reservoir.

Our day, filled with food and beauty, ended with a stop for ice cream, of course.

Minutemen Attend Camporee

On Saturday, May 1st, John Jacobson, Dick Stitt, and Jack Stokinger drove their Model As out to Beal's Chestnut Hill Farm in Southborough to help the Knox Trail Council Boy Scouts get "Back to the Future" at their annual Spring Camporee. The Boy Scouts are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Scouting in the USA. Dave Ring, the Scoutmaster from Troop 14 in Holliston welcomed the group onto the farm property.

The group was joined shortly thereafter by Minuteman Tom Zappala, who had picked up a group of scouts in his Model A Station Wagon. (Note: Tom Zappala encountered some technical difficulties on his way out to Southborough and arrived only after receiving a jump start from Minuteman Dick O'Brien). John, Dick, Jack and Tom spoke about the cars and the development of the auto industry by Henry Ford to a number of interested scouts.

Burma-Shave was introduced in 1925 by the Burma-Vita company, owned by Clinton Odell.

The company's original product was a liniment made of ingredients described as coming "from the Malay Peninsula and Burma." Demand was sparse, and the company sought to expand sales by introducing a product with wider appeal. The result was the famous Burma-Shave advertising sign program, and sales took off.

At its peak, Burma-Shave was the second-highest selling brushless shaving cream in the United States. Sales declined in the 1950s, and in 1963 the company was sold to Phillip Morris. The signs were removed at that time. The brand decreased in visibility and eventually became the property of the American Safety Razor Company.

In 1997, the American Safety Razor Company reintroduced the Burma-Shave brand, including a nostalgic shaving soap and brush kit. In fact, the original Burma-Shave was a brushless shaving cream, and Burma-Shave's own roadside signs frequently ridiculed "Grandpa's old-fashioned shaving brush."

ON THIS DAY: July 30, 1863
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
HENRY FORD

Henry Ford, born July 30, 1863, was the first of William and Mary Ford's six children. He grew up on a prosperous family farm in what is today Dearborn, Michigan.

ON THIS DAY: November 26, 1927
FORD MODEL A AUTOMOBILE ANNOUNCED
The Ford Motor Company of Detroit, Michigan announced the introduction of the Model A, the first new Ford automobile to enter the market since the Ford Model T was first introduced in 1908. The hugely successful Ford Model T

Henry enjoyed a childhood typical of the rural nineteenth century, spending days in a one-room school and doing farm chores. At an early age, he showed an interest in mechanical things and a dislike for farm work and of course went on to fame as the greatest auto maker in the world. His son, Edsel, who was responsible for the creation of the Model A, died in 1943 at age 49. In 1947, Henry Ford died at the age of 83 at Fair Lane, his Dearborn home

revolutionized the automobile industry, and over 15,000,000 million units of the "Tin Lizzie" were sold in its 19 years of automotive production and assembly. By 1927, the popularity of the outdated Model T was rapidly waning. Improved, but basically unchanged for its two-decade reign, it was losing ground to the more stylish and powerful motor cars offered by Ford Motor Company's competitors.

In May of 1927, Ford automobile production plants across the country closed, as the company began an intensive development of the more refined and modern Model A automobile. The vastly improved Ford Model A had elegant Lincoln automobile-like styling on a smaller scale, and used a capable 200.5-cubic-inch four-cylinder engine that produced 40 horsepower (hp). With prices starting at $460, nearly 5,000,000 Ford Model A automobiles, in several body styles and a variety of colors, rolled onto America's highways over a four-year period until production ended in early 1932.
